It’s been a long time inbetween drinks when it comes to Q&A’s but hopefully I’ll have a few more coming up soon with some talented English DJ’s/producers who littered my house in London most weekends. But first up, an Australian band for your aural and visual delight. Monks of Mellonwah are a rock/indie act from Sydney who are being nominated and winning awards for their videos, their song being featured in a movie and a new record is due to be out soon. Get familiar and when they get really famous you can say you liked their old stuff better than their new stuff and they really sold out.
My name is: John de la Hoyde
I play in: Monks of Mellonwah
We sound like: Hmm tough one. Maybe you should listen and find out!
We are inspired by: Led Zeppelin, RHCP, Pink Floyd, Muse and many more…. really anything since 1960.
We reside in: Sydney, Australia
Our local music scene is: Pub’s, clubs, self organized and promoted gigs, triplej , FBI, the place where we jam and write music, studio’s the net, our fans, each other.
The most annoying thing about our scene is: Lack of opportunity to grow. The Australian music scene is pretty one dimensional with few avenues to take to develop. The good thing, however, is that the worldwide web fills in the gaps and opens up a whole new universe. A&R opportunities for music placement are out there you just have to go find them!
Our best gig to date was: There are quite a few but a couple of notable ones are playing the Metro Theatre and also MELLONAID which is our own self created and promoted charity gig. Our first MELLONAID raised $12000 for the benefit of War Child Australia
The song that gets me dancing is: ABBA – Dancing Queen
First album I bought: Linkin Park – Hybrid Theory
My musical youth involved: a lot of pop punk and alternative music
Pop music is: Catchy and easily accessible
If I could have written any song it would have to be: Radiohead – Reckoner or Muse – Map of the Problematique
Do you play Fifa? Yeah but badly … my younger brother always beats me !!
Favourite Restaurant: Hurricanes Ribs at Bondi
The thing I hate most about bloggers is: Some of them copy each other yet claim they are independent. Sometimes it can all be a bit cliché.
My musical guilty pleasure is: Five – Keep on Movin
The sporting team I follow is: The Australian women’s volleyball team
*Hey my dad’s on the coaching team! – Nancy
If I weren’t a musician I would be: A brain surgeon
